Sometimes I wish my brain could be turned off, not forever, but for a bit. I am my own worst critic. Overthinking is the one quality I would love to get rid of about myself. But, it’s who I am, and I have to learn how to work with it. My mind thinks about random thoughts throughout the day which gets in the way of work. My mind also creates ‘relationship anxiety’ which creates issues that aren’t even there.
Here are some tips to help calm our overactive minds:
Be in the present
Have you ever noticed our minds think about the past and future rather than in the “now?” My brain cannot control the past and the future hasn’t even happened yet, so why would I waste my time thinking about it? Do it with me. Breathe. Now release all the thoughts you can’t control.
Find a love for nature
This always calms my mind when I’m overthinking. Go for a walk next time you feel overwhelmed. The moment you step outside leave those thoughts behind and appreciate the beauty of nature.
If your mind is racing before bed or when you’re trying to work, write it down. This will help organize your thoughts and get them off your chest so that your mind will feel at ease.
Get some me-time
When you’re busy with work and relationships it’s hard to remember to slow down. I think having me-time is extremely important. You need to take care of yourself, and this is one of the easiest ways to start doing that.
If your mind is already exhausted, I’m sure this is the last thing you want to do. But, it will help. Exercising for even 10 minutes releases endorphins, which are happy chemicals! It makes you feel peaceful, and you’ll be smiling after your workout.
I’m not saying to cure your over-thinking mind, go out and have a bunch of sex. If you’re in a relationship, I mean have sex often, especially if you’re stressed out. You may not feel like it, but after you’ll be smiling because endorphins (the happy chemicals I told you about above) will be released.
Find something else to focus on
This is something I’ve been doing lately. I’m a huge art nerd, and when I’m feeling overwhelmed I whip out a pencil and piece of paper. I might just doodle, or maybe I’ll draw something I like. Whatever it is, I’m focusing on something I love instead of focusing on something to bring me down.
Just know, you’re not alone. Our minds are wonderful, but they can also be vicious. Take a break from overthinking and try these tips, it allows your body to be happy, release endorphins, and focus on something good.
Life can be stressful, but it’s worth it!
