My nana used to tell me to reach to the sky, way down low and touch your toes, when I was young. This is because she thought stretching was important. I’ll let you in on a little secret, she was right. If you care about your muscles, you need to move them.
Your muscles will become tight, and actually shorten if you don’t stretch them. For example, if you sit in a chair all day your hamstrings will be tight in the back of your thigh. If that happens, it’s going to be harder for you to straighten your knee, which will make it harder for you to walk. Crazy, right? All because you aren’t stretching as much as you should be.
If I still haven’t convinced you, here are another 5 reasons why you need to stretch those muscles.
It works your glutes
Most of us sit around a lot when we are at work. When you’re sitting, the nerves that activate your glutes can actually shut down quickly. If that happens, other muscles in your body will start to become over-stressed which can cause your knees to ache, and you’re lower back. None of us want those problems, so start stretching those glutes.
Keeps your thoracic spine strong
This part of your body is in the middle of your back, and it’s so important to make sure you’re moving it. If you aren’t stretching it, your body can face so many complications. Your chest can tighten up, as well as your neck and shoulders. So stretch it out.
If you carry a bag or a purse regularly, your body can tighten up on one side. If you stretch a lot, your muscles won’t be as tight, and your body will be back to feeling more balanced. Overall, you’ll feel a whole lot better.
Stretching increases your blood flow which sends oxygen to your brain, which helps you have a clearer mind and better moods.
Great way to end your workout
If you are weight training, or running, your muscles are going to feel tight and probably sore. If you stretch your body out after your gym routine you will go home feeling a lot less tense.
Even if you do not work out, it is important to stretch every day. I know that’s a dedicated goal so start off stretching a couple of days a week. Hint: if you do it before bed, it will help you fall asleep quicker. Remember, almost everything is on YouTube, start browsing the site to find out how to stretch properly. Enjoy!
