I love you. These three words mean so much more than romance. Love is much greater than just a feeling, and it’s more than butterflies in your stomach. The truth is love is undefinable.
I have been in a relationship for over three years and I still haven’t been able to put a pinpoint on it. I don’t know what exactly it means to love someone, or what the word means. I know when we fall in love we feel all these tingly emotions all over our body, and our heart jumps out of our chest. We feel at bliss, and everything seems beautiful.
But, love doesn’t stop there, and perhaps it’s not about those moments at all.
Love is having a disagreement or fight with your significant other and sitting down to talk to one another even if you’re mad. It’s finding a resolution so you can move on even if you’re admitting your wrong even though you don’t think you are.
It’s having to walk away from an argument for a breather, but not walking away for good.
Love is having faith in your partner when they doubt themselves. It’s picking them back up from the ground and giving them positive reinforcement. It’s making each other the best versions you could be.
It’s finding someone you fight battles with, and for, and realizing your life is even more complete with them in it than it was before.
Love is imagining them by your side as you grow old. It’s picturing a family together, with children, and nieces and nephews. It’s going to parties and weddings and anniversaries together. It’s not picturing your life with anyone else but them.
It’s also realizing love is messy, complicated, and fearful. It’s knowing you two will have faults but you will both carry forward, together, and learn from it.
Love is seeing their flaws but not wanting them to change because you have fallen in love with those too. It’s knowing you’ll get mad at them, but at the end of the day you want to be sleeping next to them. It’s being mad at each other, but still loving and caring about each other at the same time.
It’s still, after years, thinking how lucky you are to have them in your life, and realizing they made you believe in love. It’s looking at them and adoring them so much that you know they are who you want by your side for your entire life.
It’s caring about their happiness as much as your own and never giving up on each other. Love is choosing one person and giving them your all, to be one another’s, no matter what battles you’ll face throughout life. Because, they are the only person you want to hold hands with through everything, and anything.
Love is sticking together through both the easy and the hard times.
